Moving FAQs

At E.E. Ward, we understand moving can be daunting, but we’re here to make it as simple as possible we’re here to answer any questions you have about the process. Feel free to contact us for anything specific or if you’re interested in a free quote.

In the meantime, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to keep you moving in the right direction:

1)     Why should I hire a mover?

It may seem more intuitive and cost-effective to rent a truck and handle the move yourself, but this often neglects the unexpected logistics and equipment required for a successful, stress-free move. Professional movers already have experienced staff, equipment, and properly fitted trucks to handle the job. Hiring one also means the physical stress from a move is contracted out, reducing the chance of physical injury. It’s often a more worthwhile investment, as it means you can spend time focusing on and planning other important details of your move.

2)     What does it cost to move?

A professional mover should offer you a free quote in writing before your move, and the best way to ensure it’s accurate is to have them evaluate the items in person. The scales vary widely depending on the size of a home and the distance moved, but on average, a moving company will charge between $1000 and $6000. Local moves are usually based on the time it takes and the size of the moving crew, while long-distance moves are determined by the weight and move distance.

3)     Who is the best mover?

The term “best” is entirely subjective, but there are important metrics that will increase the probability a particular company will be able to meet your needs and ensure your move is a successful one.

Take note of any awards the company bears, check their Better Business Bureau rating, and cross-reference the company’s reviews online to get an idea of the quality of service you can expect.

When you find a company that seems to meet your needs, ensure they are fully licensed and insured, and be sure to ask for their DOT number to reference with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

4)     Should I get an estimate?

Absolutely, in fact, you should get several quotes from different moving companies to ensure you’re getting, foremost, a fair price, and secondly, the best price. You should also make sure you get an estimate in writing, so you’re not charged an unexpected amount after the items are already in the truck or otherwise in the possession of a moving company.

5)     Should I pay cash for my move?

It is best to keep a record of the transaction in case of dispute, fraud, or damage to items. Tipping cash, between $20-$40, to each member of the moving crew is always appreciated.

6)     What will it cost to move if I’m only moving across town?

This varies depending on the size of your home, and for local moves, you’ll likely be quoted an hourly rate that will include workers, a truck, and packing supplies. Most companies have a minimum number of hours for such moves, but there are other services such as Taskrabbit and Dolly that are appropriate for jobs under such minimums.

7)     How much deposit should I expect to put down?

Depending on the move, companies may ask you to pay around 20% of the moving cost up front, particularly for interstate moves. Be sure to check if the deposit is refundable should your plans change.

8)     What’s the best way to pack?

Be sure to keep a checklist while packing to account for everything, taking inventory room by room. Next, prioritize the order in which they will be unloaded based on what you’ll need first after arriving at your new home – for instance, towels and bed sheets. Put a special marking on boxes so you know what’s to be unpacked first.

9)     What if my new residence isn’t ready?

Many movers can store your items at a central location near your new residence until your home is ready to be moved into, including E.E. Ward.

10)    Should I move my appliances?

Often not in the case of washers, dryers, refrigerators, and stoves. Not only do these make a home more “complete” for the new buyer moving in, but they’re large, heavy, and expensive to transport. If you do choose to move them, ensure they’re emptied and cleaned. Certain appliances like gas stoves need care in disconnection and installation, and it’s a good idea to check if your movers can provide this.

11)    Are there items I should not move?

Most movers won’t carry live plants due to the high probability they won’t make it unattended and without sunlight. Gasoline cans and other volatile or toxic chemicals are also prohibited and should be safely disposed of ahead of time.

Safer liquids should have their lids taped shut, and the boxes they’re stored in should be properly labeled. While not necessarily prohibited, it’s prudent to transport valuable or important personal items like jewelry or medications on your own.

12)    What if the truck can’t park in front of my house?

Be sure to inform your moving company about any parking or unloading restrictions and be aware some movers may charge for the extra distances they need to carry items.

13)    What should I do with my pet on a moving day?

When the movers are ready to come over and get working, it’s a good idea to find a place your pets can enjoy a small vacation. Movers operate best when doors can remain open, and no one wants your pets escaping or standing in the way. When you’re ready to finally move, stay together with them in your own vehicle on your way to your new home.

14)   What if my items are damaged?

A reputable moving company should explain the coverage they offer when you go over the quote prior to moving. The most basic liability coverage is paid by weight, not the type of item. There may be options to have coverage for the full value of damaged or lost items, but this should be discussed before the move.

15)    What’s the best way to unpack when we arrive?

Many moving companies offer their own unpacking services, be sure to see if this is of interest or even necessary when you get a quote. To handle unpacking at your own pace, be sure to have your beds set up and your toiletries handy first. This way when you’re done for the day, you have a cozy place to rest.
